Healthy Swap Saturday: Our Favorite Tropical Fruit, The Pineapple

As part of a well-rounded healthy diet, fruits are always encouraged to be consumed in abundance, but one fruit we hold dearly here at Happily Ever Healthy is the pineapple! This fruit not only reminds us of the tropical lands it originates from (and we hope to visit one day), but it really does pack quite the powerful fruity punch nutritiously. Pineapple has a lot of health benefits mainly because of its high content of vitamin C, dietary fiber, and bromelain, which is a digestive enzyme that breaks down protein.

The pineapple’s high content of vitamin C, a mainly water-soluble antioxidant that fights cell damage, has been shown to keep your skin healthy and looking good. Vitamin C fights damage to your skin caused by high sun exposure, reduces wrinkles, and improves the overall texture of your skin through the formation of collagen. Consumption of vitamin C rich pineapple has also been shown to fight cancer causing free radicals and increase heart health by decreasing blood pressure.

Pineapples contain high amounts of dietary fiber which has been shown to better control diabetes as well as promote regularity and a healthy digestive tract. The enzyme bromelain found in pineapples can assist with digestion by more easily breaking down proteins. Bromelain not only helps with digestion but also has healing effects on the body such as reduced swelling and bruising. The enzyme bromelain has been shown to even decrease sinus inflammation caused by the common cold. So the next time you are feeling under the weather or end up getting a bruise from accidentally bumping your knee on something, have a serving of pineapple chunks to see if it does the trick.

Although there are so many great health benefits of the pineapple, just keep in mind that too much of a good thing can end up being bad for you – so make sure to consume in moderation.
